The dry season is here again and as if the heat isn’t enough, the mutant flu virus is spreading and infecting everyone with cold and catarrh all around; making us all uncomfortable.

If you have experienced cold and catarrh, you will know that there is only so much you can do to get over the I’ll essential. Rest and rehydrating from loss of fluids is the best way to recover. President Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday criticised the attitude of some Nigerian youth, saying they were “only hustling to get on the gravy train.”

“More than 60 per cent of the population is below 30, a lot of them haven’t been to school and they are claiming that Nigeria is an oil producing country, therefore, they should sit and do nothing, and get housing, healthcare, education free,” Mr Buhari was quoted as saying by The Cable during a panel appearance with world leaders at the Commonwealth Business Forum in London.

The president’s comment adds to an earlier one he made criticising Nigerian youth.

During a February 2016 interview with UK Telegraph, Mr Buhari said some Nigerians in the UK, mostly youth, are disposed to criminality and should not be granted asylum there. He was fiercely criticised for the comment, with many saying it failed to convey the reality of Nigerian youth’s exploits.

Early this year, an analysis by Rice University in the U.S. showed that Nigerian youth are the most educated of all migrants in the country. The institution credited the finding to a culture of relentless drive for education amongst Nigerians.

Only on Tuesday, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo was in Lagos to meet young innovators at Andela and the larger tech community in Yaba. The hub is driven by young innovators and entrepreneurs and is widely seen as a manifestation of their entrepreneur zeal.

Mr Osinbajo had also witnessed Nigerian youth’s quest for gainful employment in the way they embraced the administration’s N-power programme which paid as low as N30,000 a month for teaching jobs.

Presidential spokespersons Femi Adesina and Garba Shehu did not respond to PREMIUM TIMES’ requests for their comments about whether the president was aware of Mr Osinbajo’s efforts and the statistics by foreign institutions on young Nigerians.

Several commentators online slammed the president for his latest remarks while others defended him.

“Buhari has lived off Nigeria his entire life. His son was treated for an accident thousands of Nigeria die from yearly at Nigeria’s expense. Yet, he sits and insults millions of Nigerians who have had the misfortune of not being born into the “right” families. It is sad,” said Biola Kazeem, a sports marketer and political commentator, in a Twitter update Wednesday.

“Serious question – has Buhari, in his adult life, ever been able to live without government income?” Another Twitter user, Feyi Fawehinmi, said Wednesday night, adding that there is little evidence to show that the president’s earns money from his livestock farm in his hometown of Daura.

Some of the president’s supporters, however, pushed back against the criticism, with many saying the president’s observations reflected his well-known personality as a blunt leader.

The supporters said the president only reechoed Nigeria’s abysmal education and employment situation, which had long been in public domain.

“In the affirmative, I think he’s giving a graphic picture of what’s going on and asking the right audience to come in,” said Ayo Akanji, one of the vocal supporters of the president online.

What is heartburn?

Heartburn is a relatively common problem caused by acid reflux – a condition where stomach contents (foods, liquids, etc.) are forced upward into the esophagus.

Here are five natural remedies for heartburn:

1. Baking Soda

Straight up, baking soda is a miracle product. One of its uses – actually, its main use – is as an antacid! Baking soda made up of 100 percent sodium bicarbonate; a slightly salty tasting, alkaline white powder. Baking soda relieves heartburn, acid indigestion, and sour stomach by counteracting excess stomach acid.

How to: Dissolve 1/2 teaspoon into a 4-ounce glass of water, or a full teaspoon in one 8-ounce glass. Repeat every two hours until heartburn is gone.

2. Bananas

Bananas have a high pH level, which is vital to restoring gastric acidity to its natural state. A banana’s texture is also great for relieving discomfort of the esophagus, according to gastroenterologist Gerard E. Mullin, MD.

How to: If you’re not a big fan of ‘nanas by themselves, slice half of a banana and add it to your morning oatmeal or cereal. You can also slice a banana and add a pinch of cinnamon powder and sugar (a pinch!).

3. Ginger

Ginger is one of the best-known natural stomach soothers around. Ginger has a few benefits concerning acid reflux; its anti-inflammatory properties are especially helpful. Inflammation of the esophagus is a key symptom of those with acid reflux troubles.

How to: Ginger is quite a versatile food; it can be diced, peeled, shaved, or sliced. It can be eaten raw or added as an ingredient for salad, soup, sushi, and other foods. Perhaps the best way to enjoy ginger when it comes to heartburn is steeping it in water to make ginger tea.

Here’s a simple ginger tea recipe.

4. Chewing Gum

While this advice may sound a bit strange, chewing gum stimulates saliva production – a natural acid buffer. Besides producing saliva, chewing gum often makes us swallow more often and pushes acids back out of the esophagus.

How to: Well, there’s not much to popping a piece of gum into your mouth and chewing. A couple pieces of advice, however: choose sugar-free gum and avoid peppermint-flavored gum. Also, don’t swallow gum as it may irritate the lining of your stomach.

5. Herbs

Per WebMD, the following herbs have demonstrated some heartburn-relieving properties: dandelion root, elm bark powder/slippery elm, euonymous bark, holy thistle herb, ginger rhizome, gentian root, meadowsweet herb, myrrh resin, lemon balm leaf, valerian root, southern prickly ash berries, oat seed.

How to: Nowadays, most herbs are sold as supplements or as standalone items. On this note, some supplements are thought to interact with certain prescription medications, so be sure to check with your doctor. The same applies if you have an underlying medical condition.

Preventative Measures

There are plenty of lifestyle changes that may reduce the production of stomach acid. Here are a few:

– avoid smoking
– exercise regularly
– drink plenty of fresh water
– do not eat lying down
– eat a well-balanced diet
– eat smaller, more frequent meals
– limit heavy lifting and straining
– limit and monitor potential ‘trigger foods,’ including: alcohol, caffeine, citrus fruits, milk and dairy products, soft drinks, carbonated juices, tomatoes.

– review prescription medications with your doctor

Nigerian singer, wandecoal's Baby mama "Temitope Ogunnusi" claims that the singer and his mum abducted her son in 2010 and haven't let her see him since then.

Temitope Ogunnusi’s 10-year-old son, Joseph, was only two when he was separated from her by the parents of a Nigerian pop star who allegedly felt she was not educated enough to be the wife of their son, Oluwatobi Wande Ojosipe aka Wande Coal.

Temitope told NewsmakersNG that she was 16, when she met the popular singer at Jubilee Estate, near Otedola Estate, at the Lagos end of the Lagos-Ibadan expressway, in 2008, and they took to each other like duck to water. Wande Coal was 23 then.

Temitope revealed that the Tur-Key Nla crooner promised her heaven and earth, and his bed became their playground until he inadvertently scored a goal in one of the matches.

When Temitope told Wande Coal that he was going to be a father, the successful singer rejected the pregnancy. “Do you want to kill my career?” he allegedly asked Temitope.

Temitope said that people who were not even in the know also acknowledged the speaking likeness with her son and Wande Coal, when in contact with the boy.

When asked if any of Wande Coal’s friends was aware of the love affair when it was blooming, Temitope mentioned another Nigerian Pop Star, Oladapo Daniel Oyebanjo aka D’Banj.

She said, “D’Banj was aware. He was close to Wande Coal, and he was the person I first complained to when the pregnancy was rejected. D’Banj was shocked. He said ‘No, Wande cannot deny this’.”
